Which threads to use part 3 – and I’m off

And I’m off.. Delighted to try out the CXC threads

And i’m off… I’ve finally managed to ‘bobbinate’ all the threads and start stitching.I gridded the fabric as I’m great at miscounting! First time gridding so fingers crossed it’ll help! Also my first time parking too so hopefully I won’t get to muddled. So far so good but it’s only been 6 different colours! I’m also railroading to try and keep it neat.

Trying to grid the fabric

Finally managed to get started

I love the way the CXC feels so soft in the hand and covers really well. I’m stitching 2 stands over 1 hooked on 18ct. I had no idea, however, that my eyesight is worse than when I was 20 šŸ¤£. 18ct is small. Luckily I have my magnifying glass light. It’s been indispensable in the evenings. I changed from the roll frame to a hoop partly because my chair reclines and the frame was a bit too far away but mostly because Monty can’t sit on the hoop!

Pattern Keeper app

I’m also giving Pattern keeper app a go (available on Google play for Android devices). I thought it wouldn’t be so good but….

…the pattern imports great and after assigning colour numbers to the symbols it’s a game changer for me. You can zoom in and out. It gives you your Stitch count for the day and the percentage of the pattern completed. You can even frog and mark the parked threads. I recommend it to anyone who hasn’t tried it yet (and has an Android!)

So onwards and upwards. Hopefully I’ll finish this piece before Christmas…2024šŸ¤£

Which threads to use part 2 – CXC has arrived …

Really excited! The CXC has arrived

The CXC has arrived ! The other day the post lady delivered a large pack of cross stitch threads way quicker than anticipated.  Well packaged and not tangled was a good start.  The spanking new 18 count (settled on 18 count aida for Python) aida arrived today – ordered 2 metres so have plenty for 3 or 4 projects. I’m ready to go.  I think I might grid the fabric first so I won’t get too lost while stitching. The printer’s just spent it’s lunch hour producing the pattern (I print on high quality to make sure the symbols print properly) and I’ve downloaded the PDF to my phone in case I need to enlarge a section.  So now I just need to sort out all the threads and get them ‘in position’ as it were.  I’m quite excited to try out the CXC threads. They’re so much softer to the touch than DMC and a little thicker so I’m going to test a small square to see if I need to stitch with 1 or 2 strands.  Photos of my thread delivery – they didn’t have the newer DMC numbers in CXC so they sent DMC for those.

Which threads to use part 1 – To DMC or not to DMC

Happy there’s a great cross stitch thread market…DMC, CXC?

So I’ve decided to start a new cross stitch pattern… Balance Achieved available from modXstitch

 Original photo

 Cross stitch mock up

It’s actually a photo of my cat Python so it seemed like a good place to start. So, it’s the smaller version, just 333 x 350 stitches and 73 different colours. The question I asked myself was should I use DMC threads or try the much talked about CXC threads? Having priced up the threads needed I’ve decided to try out the CXC (€32 for 250 skeins of choice from AliExpress)    So here’s the exciting thing (for me anyway!) – the threads have arrived in France, woohoo. Should be just a 1 or 2 days now before they arrive. I feel a photo shoot coming on upon arrival!    Once I’ve seen the threads I can decide on which count to use – I’m leaning to towards 14, 16 or 18 at the moment.  I’ll post photos from time to time and give my opinion on the CXC threads – secretly hopping them to be good as that’s save heaps of money with all the patterns I want to do!
